Scammer Working At Roadside Triggers Calls To Police

(PERTH EAST, ON) – A citizen who thought they were helping someone in need has realized that they were the victim of a scam.

The victim was driving on Perth Line 26, in the Township of Perth East, around 3:00 p.m. on April 27 2020, when they were flagged down by another motorist. The male suspect claimed he needed money for gas, and offered to sell a gold ring for money. The victim gave the suspect $20.

Police received numerous calls about the same suspect and vehicle in that area, and the OPP investigation has revealed that this was in fact a scam, and the gold ring was fake.

The OPP is urging the public to be cautious when dealing with someone who they don’t know, and report suspicious activity immediately. For more information on fraud, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
