Death Investigation

(Nottawasaga, ON) – Members from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating a sudden death occurrence in New Tecumseth near Victoria Street.  

On December 31,2024, at 12:51 p.m., Nottawasaga OPP members were dispatched to a sudden death occurrence. A 38-year-old has been confirmed deceased at the scene and the investigation is ongoing and being overseen by the Criminal Investigation Branch in conjunction with the Nottawasaga Major Crime Unit.

The OPP is asking for the public’s assistance with this investigation. If you have any information or any video footage, including doorbell camera footage, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or your local area Crime Stoppers.

There will be an increase in police presence within the area for the foreseeable future, please avoid the area as the investigation continues. Updates will be provided as necessary.

One Dead In Hanover – One Arrested

(HANOVER, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is assisting the Hanover Police Service (HPS) with a homicide investigation in the Town of Hanover, where one person was taken into custody.

On December 17, 2024, at approximately 8:50 a.m., members of the HPS responded to an incident at an address on 5th Street in Hanover. Upon arrival, officers located one person deceased.

Following the initial investigation, a vehicle of interest was observed in the Owen Sound area, and as a result, one person was taken into custody by the Owen Sound Police Service.

There is no threat to public safety.

The investigation is in its early stages and residents should expect to see an increased police presence in the area of 5thStreet in Hanover.

The South Bruce OPP Crime Unit is assisting HPS with this ongoing investigation, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

One Dead – Tyson ALTVATER Charged

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating after a serious collision on Highway 12 near Concession Road 11 in Ramara Township.

           On June 11, 2024 officers of the Orillia OPP responded to a serious collision involving two vehicles at Highway 12 and Concession Road 11 in Ramara Township. The initial information was that two vehicles had collided, one was in the ditch on fire, the other vehicle was still in the roadway, with occupants trapped inside.      

  With the assistance of Rama Police Service, Simcoe County Paramedics and Ramara Fire, everyone was able to get occupants out of the vehicle. Two parties were transported to a local area hospital and one occupant was air lifted to a Toronto area trauma centre with serious injuries.

 The Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement unit (TIME) attended the location to continue the investigation. The highway was closed for several hours for investigation, however, has since been re-opened.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed or has camera footage of the collision and has not spoken with police is asked to contact the Orillia OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

On June 13, 2024, a 92-year-old male of Ramara Township succumbed to his injuries as a result of this collision.

In October 2024, Orillia OPP and TIME concluded their investigation.

As a result of this investigation, Tyson ALTVATER, 32-YEAR-OLD of the City of Orillia has been charged with the following:

  • Dangerous Operation causing death contrary to section 320.13(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada

Death Investigation Update – Name Released

(WHITESAND FIRST NATION, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is conducting a death investigation in the community of Whitesand First Nation.

On June 15, 2024, just after 9:00 p.m., members of the Thunder Bay and Armstrong OPP Detachments and Emergency Medical Services received information regarding an individual in medical distress at a residence in Whitesand First Nation.

The individual was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Stacey SHAPWAYKEESIC of Whitesand First Nation.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto later this week.

The investigation by the OPP North West Region Crime Unit, Regional Support Team, and OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Investigators do not believe there is a threat to public safety.

Death In Meaford

(MEAFORD, ON) – On April 27, 2024, at 11:08 a.m., the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a possible drowning in the Meaford harbour.

Emergency responders pulled an individual from the water who was unresponsive. An 81-year-old resident of Meaford was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The incident remains under investigation, there is no concern for public safety at this time.
