Fatal ATV Incident

(ORILLIA, ON) – Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal all-terrain vehicle (ATV) incident that occurred overnight in the Township of Ramara.

On July 22, 2024, just before 8:00 a.m., Orillia OPP, Simcoe County Paramedic Service and Township of Ramara Fire, were dispatched to Concession Road A, Ramara Township for a report of an individual next to an all-terrain vehicle located on private property. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as a 31-year-old male of Ramara Township.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team and The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario attended the scene and are assisting with the investigation.

More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(ORILLIA, ON) – Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged four individuals over the weekend with Impaired driving related offences.  

Between July 19, 2024, and July 22, 2024, officers from the Orillia detachment of the OPP were dispatched to multiple traffic complaints and conducted regular traffic patrols within the City of Orillia and surrounding townships. Members of the community called the provinces emergency service numbers and as a result, seventeen charges were laid over the weekend by responding officers. A total of four drivers were arrested and charged. Four vehicles were impounded, and the drivers’ licenses were suspended.

Motorists are asked to prioritize safety on our roads by slowing down, driving safely, cautiously, and never drive impaired.

As a result, Sebastian TUFFORD; 18-year-old, from Barrie has been subsequently charged with:

  • Operation while impaired by alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – 80 plus
  • Failure or refusal to comply with probation order

As a result, Naman KHATRI; 20-year-old, from Barrie has been subsequently charged with:

  • Obstruct peace officer
  • Public Mischief
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Operation while impaired by alcohol
  • Operation while impaired – 80 plus
  • Fail to properly wear seatbelt
  • Novice Driver – B.A.C. above zero
  • Driving while under suspension
  • G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver
  • Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor

As a result, Taylor Douglas EDWARDS; 26-year-old, from St. Catharines has been subsequently charged with:

  • Operation while impaired

As a result, Wesley Peter Charles TUZYK; 33-year-old, from Orillia has been subsequently charged with:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Failure or refusal to comply with a demand

FOXTON – Drunk Driving, Hit & Run

(ORILLIA, ON) – Officers from the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a male party following an early morning fail to remain collision with impaired and highway traffic act offences.

At 6:00 a.m., on July 18, 2024, Orillia OPP responded to a call for a motor vehicle striking a light post in the area of Memorial Ave and Dunedin St in the City of Orillia. Police were advised the vehicle had sustained extensive damage and did not remain at the scene.

With assistance from the community, and police investigation, police were able to locate the involved vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, officers noted numerous signs of being impaired.

As a result of this investigation, Donald FOXTON, 72-year-old of the City of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- alcohol, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Fail to remain contrary to section 200(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges at a later date August 2024. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and vehicle was impounded for a period of 7 days.

Corey GIBSON – Impaired Driving

(ORILLIA, ON) – Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged two individuals. One investigation was conducted after a concerned citizen alerted police to an impaired driver and the second investigation was conducted through regular traffic patrols within the City of Orillia.

On July 16, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., officers from the Orillia detachment of the OPP were alerted by a concerned citizen to an individual that had been drinking and was attempting to drive a vehicle in an Orillia parking lot. Officers located the individual within the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, where they were arrested and charged with impaired related offences.  

As a result, Adam POULTON; 40-year-old, from Orillia has been subsequently charged with:

  • Failure or refusal to comply with a demand

Later that same day at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers from the Orillia detachment of the OPP while conducting regular patrols observed a commercial vehicle. Officers conducted a traffic stop and were led into an impaired driving investigation. One individual was arrested and charged with impaired related offences.  

As a result, Corey GIBSON; 37-year-old, from North Bay has been subsequently charged with:

  • Adult operation while impaired

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges on August 27, 2024.

Drug Bust – Names Released

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) seized a large quantity of drugs and weapons.

On July 6, 2024, just before 7:00 p.m., officers of Orillia OPP were on general patrol on Barrie Road, in the City of Orillia. Officers observed a motor vehicle was travelling in a manner consistent with driving impaired, therefore a traffic stop was initiated. Upon speaking with the occupants, the officer noticed a cannabis joint in the motor vehicle, therefore the occupants were detained for further investigation. During the initial investigation, police located:

–      Police pepper spray

–      A prohibited knife

–      A conductive energy weapon.

–      Canadian Currency

Through investigation, officers formed grounds the occupants were trafficking in illegal substances. The motor vehicle was seized, and a warrant was obtained to search the vehicle fully.

The warrant was executed, and the following was seized by police:

–      A loaded Smith and Wesson revolver handgun

–      164.5 grams of fentanyl

–      6.9 grams of cocaine

–      37 hydromorphone

–      1 oxycodone

As a result of this investigation, Irshad AHMED, 41-year-old of the City of Barrie has been charged with:

–      Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order, contrary to section 117.01(1) if the Criminal Code of Canada (CC) x2

–      Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition contrary to section 92(2) CC

–      Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm section 91(1) CC

–      Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm section 94 CC.

–      Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition section 95(1) CC

–      Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm section 95(1).

–      Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 section 354(1)(a)

–      Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose section 88 CC

Drug Bust – Names Released

(ORILLIA, ON) – Members of the Orillia Detachments Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid drug trafficking related charges and seized a quantity of drugs.

Over the last few months, Orillia CSCU began investigating individuals who were allegedly trafficking drugs in the City of Orillia to a specific address on Barrie Rd and Dunlop St. Utilizing investigative techniques police were able to gather evidence further advancing their investigation. On June 21, 2024 – satisfied with the information gathered the Orillia CSCU proceeded to the next steps in their investigation. With the assistance of Orillia OPP frontline members a search warrant was executed at an address on Barrie Rd. in the City of Orillia and four individuals were arrested and charged with several Drug related charges.

As a result of the investigation, the following was seized:

1 functioning digital scale.

Approximately 3 grams methamphetamine.

48 “PGB” capsules.

9.5 grams cocaine.

Cutting agents.

1 functioning police radio scanner.

975.00 in Canadian Currency.

Sherrylynn HART, 54 years old, of Orillia, has been charged with:

  •      Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges at a later date in August 2024.

Michael HART-PAYNE, 29 years old, of Orillia, has been charged with:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges at a later date in August 2024.

Tyler JOHNSTON, 18 years old, of Orillia, has been charged with:

  • Adult Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Adult Poss of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia, to answer to the charges at a later date in August 2024.

Donald KINGSBURY, 60 years old, of Orillia, has been charged with:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine

Tricia BOTTAN Was Arrested

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 12 in the Township of Ramara.

On June 18, 2024, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Orillia OPP received information regarding a serious motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on Highway 12 near Concession 1 in Ramara Township.

Orillia OPP arrived on scene with Ramara Fire and Simcoe County Paramedics (EMS) to one vehicle in the ditch and one vehicle blocking the highway with significant damage. With the assistance of Ramara Fire, they were able to extract the driver from the vehicle in the ditch. Upon speaking with the driver of the other vehicle, officers noticed the driver to be showing signs of being intoxicated by alcohol.

Both drivers were transported by EMS to a local hospital, however both were later transported to Toronto area Trauma Centre’s in life threatening condition.

The Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement unit (TIME) attended the location to continue the investigation. The highway was closed for several hours for investigation, however, has since been re-opened.

As a result of this investigation, Tricia BOTTAN, 52-year-old of Scarborough has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation causing bodily harm contrary to section 320.14(2).

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed or has camera footage of the collision and has not spoken with police is asked to contact the Orillia OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

More Impaired Drivers Arrested

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a handful of impaired drivers over the weekend.

On June 13, 2024, at 4:00p.m., Orillia OPP responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Wallis Street, in Oro-Medonte Township. Officers attended and located the vehicle and driver. An open container of alcohol was observed in the vehicle and the driver was showing numerous signs of being intoxicated.

As a result, Christopher WILSON, 48-year-old of Severn Township has been charged with:

·        Operation while impaired- contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) CC

·        Failure or refusal to comply with demand contrary to section 320.15(1) CC.

·        Breach of Probation Order (POA) contrary to section 75 of the Provincial Offences Act

·        Fail to identify self contrary to section 39.1(6) HTA.

·        Driving while under suspension contrary to section 53(1) HTA

·        Having care or control of a motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 42(1)(a) LLCA.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and later released with a future court date.

On June 15, 2024, after 2:00 a.m., officers of the Orillia OPP were conducting a RIDE program in the City of Orillia. A vehicle approached the RIDE program, did not follow basic instructions of a RIDE program, and the driver of the vehicle displayed numerous signs of being intoxicated.

As a result, Kevin BACKWELL, 27-year-old of Nassagaweya Township has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) CC

The accused was released on an Undertaking with a future court date.

On June 15, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., an officer of the Orillia OPP was on general patrol in the area of Highway 11 and Line 10, Oro-Medonte Township when a vehicle was obviously travelling above the posted speed limit. Speed enforcement equipment was utilized, and the vehicle was found to be travelling at stunt driving speeds. A traffic stop was initiated. Upon speaking with the driver, open containers of alcohol and cannabis were observed. This caused the officer to enter into an impaired driving investigation.

As a result, Daniel THOMAS, 45-year-old of the City of Orillia has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) CC
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance- Cocaine contrary to section 4(1) if the Controlled Drug and Substance Act
  • Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to section 42(1)(a) of the Liquor Licence and Control Act
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act
  • Drive motor vehicle- Perform Stunt contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit contrary to section 7(1) (a0 HTA
  • Operate motor vehicle without insurance contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory automobile insurance act.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

On June 16, 2024, at 11:30 p.m., officers of Orillia OPP were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 North, in Oro-Medonte Township when a vehicle was observed obviously travelling above the posted limit. Speed enforcement equipment was utilized, determined the vehicle was in fact speeding and initiated a traffic stop. The driver displayed numerous signs of being intoxicated.

As a result, Brent MOON, 50-year-old of Oro Medonte Township has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) CC
  • Speeding 1-49 km/h over the posted limit contrary to section 128 HTA

The accused was released on an Undertaking with a future court date.

On June 18, 2024, just before 2:00a.m., Orillia OPP received a traffic complaint for a possible impaired driver. Officers attend and located the vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, they were showing numerous signs of being intoxicated.

As a result, Justin KARJALAINEN, 41-year-old of the City of Barrie has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) CC

The accused was released on an Undertaking with a future court date.

All the accused party’s driver’s licences were suspended for 90 days, and vehicles were impounded for a period of 7 days.

2 Charged At RIDE

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged two drivers with impaired related charges.

On June 12, 2024, just after 2:00 p.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 400 North in the Township of Springwater when a vehicle obviously travelling above the posted limit of 100 km/hr was observed. The officer activated the speed enforcement equipment and found the vehicle was travelling at a stunt driving speed of 155 km/hr. Once the officer was able to speak with the driver, numerous signs of being intoxicated were noted.

As a result, Dwayne HARKNESS, 64-year-old of Minden Hills Township has been charged with:

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand contrary to section 320.15(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Drive motor vehicle- perform stunt- excessive speed contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

On June 12, 2024, after 10:00 p.m., officers of the Orillia OPP were conducting a RIDE program in Lagoon City, Ramara Township. A motor vehicle approached officers, who entered an impaired driving investigation as the driver was showing signs of being intoxicated.

As a result, Randal SHAUBEL, 73-year-old of Ramara Township has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol contrary to section 320.14(1)(a)
  • Drive vehicle with cannabis readily available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017
  • Driver fail to surrender license contrary to section 33(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Counterfeit Money & Drug Bust – Names Released

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police executed three warrants in to City of Barrie, seizing a quantity of drugs, counterfeit money and Canadian currency.

In April 2024, Orillia OPP CSCU received information that lead them to a drug trafficking investigation. The investigation resulted in officers obtaining and executing search warrants for several locations within the City of Barrie.  

On June 12, 2024 Orillia OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) along with Barrie City Police CSCU, Dufferin and Huronia West OPP CSCU, Barrie Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Windsor Police Drug Unit and Orillia OPP uniform members, three search warrants were executed and six individuals are facing multiple charges.

Tysen BUDHA-JOHNSTON, 24-year-old of the City of Barrie has been charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking-opioid contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drug and Substance Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of Trafficking-cocaine CDSA 5(2)
  • Traffick in Schedule 1 substance- Cocaine CDSA 5(1)
  • Possession of a schedule 1 substance- opioid CDSA 4(1)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000 contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Possessing Counterfeit Money CC 450(b)
  • Failure to comply with release order CC 145(5)(a)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Adrian HUMPHREY, 26-year-old of no fixed address, has been charged with:

·        Traffick in Schedule 1 substance- cocaine CDSA 5(1)

·        Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking- cocaine CDSA 5(2)

·        Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking- opioid CDSA 5(2)

·        Possession of proceed of property obtained by crime over $5000 CC 354(1)(a)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Natalie ARNOUK, 25-year-old form the City of Windsor, has been charged with:

  • Traffick in Schedule 1 substance- cocaine CDSA 5(1)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking- cocaine CDSA 5(2)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking- opioid CDSA 5(2)
  • Possession of proceed of property obtained by crime over $5000 CC 354(1)(a)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Tyler SOUTHERLAND, 33-year-old, of the City of Orillia has ben charged with:

  • Traffick in schedule 1 substance- Methamphetamines CDSA 5(1)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance- Methamphetamine CDSA 4(1)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000 CC 354(1)(a)

The accused was released on an undertaking with a future court date.

Patrick LOVE, 35-year-old of the City of Barrie, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking- cocaine CDSA 5(2)
  • Possession of Schedule 1 substances for the purpose of trafficking- opioid CDSA 5(2)
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose CC 88

The accused was released on an undertaking with a future court date.

Shawn Cromwell, 36 -year-old of the City of Barrie was also arrested on unrelated, outstanding charges. The accused was held pending a bail hearing.

The following property has been seized:

  • 959 grams of cocaine
  • 175 grams of fentanyl
  • 10 oxycodone pills
  • 2.7 grams of methamphetamine
  • $30 000 in counterfeit Canadian currency
  • $7500 in Canadian currency
  • Replica firearm
