Stephen LAWRENCE – Assault, Mischief

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON)- Accused arrested on outstanding warrants and while in custody more charges added.

On October 1, 2024, the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an assist call on Beckett Boulevard in the City of Elliot Lake.  At approximately 8:00 p.m., police attended the residence and were met by an individual who was requesting a ride to southern Ontario. 

Investigation determined the individual had outstanding warrants and was subsequently arrested. The accused was later transported to Blind River detachment and held for bail court. While in custody the accused took a blanket and shoved it down a toilet then urinated on the floor. The accused continually spat at staff, urinated on the floor and threw food all over the cell walls.

On October 2, 2024, at approximately 12:30 p.m., East Algoma’s Special Constable attended the cell area and was spat on in the face.

As a result, Stephen LAWRENCE, 41 years of age from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Mischief – destroys or damages property
  • Assault Peace Officer
  • Fail to attend court after having appeared
  • Fail to comply with Appearance Notice – court/fingerprints

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice-Bail Court in Blind River on October 2, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

Myra SOUTHWIND – Meth

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – A driver was arrested and charged after numerous traffic complaints were reported in Elliot Lake.

On September 28, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received numerous complaints on Paris Drive about a female driving erratically in a small grey Sport-Utility Vehicle (SUV). The complainants also reported that the girl driving looked to be high on drugs and almost hit them. Police later located the SUV at a known residence on Tokyo Crescent and the female driver was subsequently arrested. Also, in her possession was approximately 3 grams of suspected methamphetamine. The driver was later assessed by an OPP Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) and charged.

Myra SOUTHWIND, 47-years-old, from Serpent River First Nation was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – Drugs
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance -Methamphetamine

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 12, 2024.

The OPP would like to remind the motoring public to drive sober; this includes drug consumption as well. Impairment by drugs is a crime under the Criminal Code and drivers are subject to the same penalties as those who are charged with driving while impaired by alcohol.  A charge of impairment by drugs involves all drugs, be it prescription, over-the-counter and those that are illegal.

Michael MCCLEERY Was Arrested

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – Prohibited driver from Michigan charged in Elliot Lake.

On September 14, 2024, at approximately 3:45 p.m. East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting general patrol duties on Mississauga Avenue. Police recognized a four-door sedan with a Michigan plate as the driver had been previously charged with impaired operation in November of 2023.  

A subsequent vehicle stop was conducted and the driver was arrested. The vehicle was also towed and impounded.     

Michael MCCLEERY, 62-years-old, of Michigan was charged with – Operation While Prohibited Under the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 10, 2024.

Brandon FOURNIER Was Arrested

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a person after a traffic stop on Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake.

On September 12, 2024, at approximately 11:15 a.m., police stopped a grey pickup truck with a cracked windshield. The driver also had a suspended driver’s license and drugs in their possession. 

Brandon FOURNIER, 25-years-old, of Spanish was charged with:

·      Possession of a Schedule I substance – Cocaine

·      Driving while under suspension (two counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on November 14, 2024.

David WADE – Threats

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged one person after ongoing family dispute.

On September 5, 2024, police responded to a dispute related call on Ste Camillus Crescent in the City of Elliot Lake. The complainant reported on-going disputes with a family member. On this date, there were numerous threats made to cause bodily harm and damage property belonging to the complainant.   

David WADE, 45-years-old, from Elliot Lake, was arrested and charged with:

  • Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm (two counts)
  • Uttering Threats – damage property
  • Failure to comply with undertaking

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on September 6, 2024.

Christopher SIMPSON-JOHNSTON Was Arrested

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On September 4, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a person after a traffic stop on Pine Road.

Police were conducting regular patrol duties near Spruce Avenue and Highway 108 when an alert was indicated by the Automatic Licence Plate Reader (ALPR). The vehicle was followed and subsequently stopped.

Christopher SIMPSON-JOHNSTON, 31-years-old, of Serpent River First Nation, was charged with:

  • Failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court
  • Owner permit operation of motor vehicle without insurance
  • Operate unsafe motor vehicle

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on September 5 , 2024.

Bradley WILLETT Was Arrested Again

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – Elliot Lake All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operator arrested again after breaching prior release conditions.

On September 2, 2024, East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on general patrol when a known person was observed operating an ATV on Pearson Drive. The operator was in contravention of prior release conditions to not operate a motor vehicle. Police intercepted the operator on Lauzon Crescent and a subsequent arrest was made.

Bradley WILLETT, 24-years-old, of Elliot Lake was charged with – two counts of failure to comply with release order.

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on September 3, 2024, and was remanded into custody.

Martin BATES – Fraud, Theft

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON)- One person arrested and charged for 16 offences.

On August 26, 2024, the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began a fraud investigation that occurred between August 10, 2024, and August 18, 2024, that took place at a local outfitters store in the City of Elliot Lake.

Investigation determined an employee stole store items, cash, had pocketed money from the till and refunded store items by falsifying invoices.  Closed circuit television (CCTV) recorded most of the fraudulent transactions and thefts.

On August 29, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., the OPP made an arrest and recovered more store items.

As a result, Martin BATES, 48 years-of-age from Elliot Lake was charged with: 

  • Fraud under $5000 (seven counts)
  • Falsification books and documents (five counts)
  • Theft under $5000 (four counts)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 10, 2024.

Heiko SCHMITZ – Weapon

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – Police arrested and charged one person after responding to a call of a man with a gun.

On August 13, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called in relation to a man on a bicycle with a handgun at an apartment complex parking lot on Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake. 

Police located the man and bicycle a short time later at a residence on Tokyo Crescent. The man attempted to evade officers, and after a short altercation, he was safely arrested. The handgun was safely recovered, and it was only then that police learned it was an airsoft pistol made to look like a real gun. 

Heiko SCHMITZ, 53-years-old from Elliot Lake, was charged with:

·      Carrying concealed weapon

·      Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

·      Possession of firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on August 14, 2024.

Kenneth O’KEEFE – Threats, Assault, Etc.

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – An Elliot Lake driver was charged after a dispute at a residence on Washington Crescent.

On July 23, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m. the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to the residence regarding a family dispute. The complainant reported being threatened by a family member. That member then smashed into the complainant’s vehicle when departing in a green pickup truck. Police stopped the pickup truck a short time after on Hirshhorn Avenue. The driver was spoken to who’s breath emanated a strong odour of alcoholic beverage and exhibited signs of impairment. The driver was irate and very belligerent, uncooperative with police, and consequently arrested after refusing to comply with demands.

Kenneth O’KEEFE, 57-years-old, from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Assault
  • Mischief Under $5000
  • Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm
  • Drive commercial motor vehicle – no licence

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on September 12, 2024.
