March Break ATV Complaints

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) During the “March Break” the Perth County OPP has responded to calls from the public about ATV’s being driven dangerously in a number of Perth County communities.

The calls have come in during daytime hours when parents have been at work and children were left at home. This causes officers to wonder “parents do you know where your children are and do they have access to the keys of your ATV?”

Police want to remind parents and children that operating ATV’s is not “child’s play”. They are powerful machines not designed and equipped to be operated on paved or public roads.

The calls responded to all have things in common. Riders are not wearing helmets, are driving in a fast and dangerous manner and there is usually a passenger on the machine. It is vital that parents ensure that their children obey the following instructions.

o Ride off-road only, never on public roads.
o Wear your helmet.
o Protect your eyes and body.
o Safety inspect the ATV before you ride.
o Ride with others – never alone.
o Always supervise youngsters.
o Ride sober – no alcohol or drugs.
o Respect the environment.
o Ride within your capabilities.
o Respect trails and private property.
