(KINCARDINE, ON.) – The South Bruce OPP are warning residents of a scam that was attempted during the early evening hours of March 16th, 2010 at a residence along Snobelen Trail in Huron Township. A lone male canvasser told the home owner that he was with the Charity of Hope and collecting funds for the Women’s House of Bruce County. The male gave his name as Gary Miller, who appears to be in his 40’s and has Grey/Blond hair. A call to the Women’s House revealed that they don’t have anyone collecting for them and they don’t go door to door to collect funds.
The Charity of Hope is a legitimate, registered charitable organization; this attempt was not a sanctioned collection.
The South Bruce OPP would like to remind the public that a canvasser for a legitimate charity will carry identification that clearly identifies what they are collecting for. If you have concerns about a particular canvasser, you can always contact the charity before you make a donation.
Anyone having information that can assist Police with investigations is asked to call South Bruce OPP at 519-396-3341 (Kincardine), 519-881-3130 (Walkerton) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 -TIPS (8477). OPP Dispatch – 1-888-310-1122
