Five Year Old Driver Hits House

(MITCHELL, ON) On Sunday evening shortly after 6 p.m. Perth County OPP officers responded to a Mitchell residence where a van had struck a house and a parked vehicle.

Upon police arrival it was discovered that the driver of the van was unlicenced and had not been consuming alcohol. Instead, the driver was found to be a five years of age.

The child had been placed in a seatbelt by his mother who then ran back into the house to pick up skates as they were to go skating. The child undid the seatbelt, climbed into the driver’s seat and put the van in reverse. The van reversed into the residence at which point the child put the vehicle in drive and it drove into a parked vehicle. The van came to a stop against the parked vehicle and the child could be safely removed from the van.

The house and parked vehicle sustained minor damage due to the slow speeds of the van. Police completed a Traffic Accident Report and investigation into this incident is continuing.
