Rawan JABER – Fraud

(ESSEX, ON) -The Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested two individuals in connection with an attempted “grandparent scam” targeting a vulnerable senior.

On Thursday March 5, 2026, at approximately 1:08 p.m. a local resident from Fairview Avenue East in the Town of Essex received a phone call from a male claiming to be her grandson in distress. The suspect attempted to convince the victim to withdraw money for legal fees and advised someone would attend the residence to collect the money.

Fortunately, a neighbor recognized the scam and contacted OPP immediately who responded to the scene and arrested two persons.

Rawan JABER, 39-years-old, and Khalid SAWA, 35-years-old, both of Windsor, have been charged with the following Criminal Code offence:

  • Fraud Under $5,000

Both accused were held pending a bail hearing.

The Essex County OPP reminds the public to be vigilant about frauds targeting seniors. If you or someone you know receives a suspicious call requesting money, verify the information with a trusted family member and contact police immediately.
