(RENFREW, ON) – On December 23, 2020, at around 10:00 p.m., members of the Renfrew County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check in the Town of Renfrew. A vehicle actively avoided the check point and was later observed on Elgin Avenue West.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated away, only stopping briefly when blocked in, which resulted in minor damage to a police cruiser and the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was located again on Highway 511 and further attempts were made to bring the vehicle to a stop.
OnStar was contacted by the rental agency, which led to the vehicle finally coming to a stop on the northbound shoulder of Highway 511 south of Larocque Road.
The driver immediately jumped over the guard rail on the northbound side and ran off.
The OPP Emergency Response Team, (ERT) along with the Canine Unit, were deployed and at around 2:00 a.m., December 24, the suspect was located. The driver and three passengers were arrested.
