(TOWNSHIP OF ALNWICK-HALDIMAND, ON) – Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested an individual following a report of a stolen vehicle.
On November 5, 2024, shortly after 4:00 p.m., police responded to a report of a theft of a motor vehicle from a business premises off County Road 2 in Grafton. At around the same time, police received reports of a single vehicle collision which had occurred earlier on Highway 401 near Lyle Street. The driver failed to remain on scene and fled on foot. It is believed an unknowing member of the public, provided the accused with a lift to Grafton where the passenger vehicle was stolen.
A description of the vehicle was given to OPP along with a direction of travel. An officer then observed the vehicle westbound on County Road 2 and it failed to stop for police.
Shortly after, OPP observed the same vehicle involved in a single vehicle collision in the area of County Road 2 and Normar Road in Cobourg. Again, the driver fled on foot and attempted to hide nearby. The individual was soon located, arrested and taken into custody. There were no injuries reported and no other vehicles were involved.
As a result, Joseph CONNELL, 34-years-old, from Curve Lake, has been charged with:
– Theft of a motor vehicle
– Flight from peace officer
– Fail to remain – two counts.
The accused was held for bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
