Head On Collisions Avoided – 52 Year Old Facing Dangerous Driving Charge

(COUNTY OF WELLINGTON, ON) – On December 19, 2020, at approximately 10:00 p.m. a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was on general patrol in the area of Wellington Road 109 in the Township of Mapleton.

At this time, the officer observed a white pick-up truck travelling westbound at a high rate of speed while attempting to pass other motor vehicles. Two eastbound vehicles were forced to take evasive action by swerving to avoid a head-on collision.

Another officer who was a little further west, observed the white pick-up travelling at a speed that appeared well above the posted 80 km/h limit. The vehicle was locked on radar travelling in excess of 165km/h.

A short time later, the same pick-up truck was spotted by a witness and police on Main Street in Palmerston. After nearly causing another collision, police measured the vehicle’s speed of 115km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone. Police did not pursue the pick-up due to safety concerns.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., the suspect vehicle was observed by another officer travelling eastbound on Wellington Road 109 at Wellington Road 10, Township of Mapleton. The officer was conducting stationary radar and measured a speed in excess of 170km/h in a posted 80km/h zone. The officer deployed a tire deflation device and police were successful in stopping the pick-up truck. The driver was arrested at the scene.

Vincenzo E. D’AGOSTINO, 52-years-old, of Vaughan has been charged with Dangerous Driving contrary to the Criminal Code and Race a Motor Vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The Accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice-Guelph on January 12, 2021 to answer to the charges. The vehicle and driver’s licence were seized for a period of seven days as per statute.
